San Diego County spans a remarkable range of growing conditions in a short distance. Near the coast the marine layer holds summer temperatures down and keeps humidity up; twenty miles inland the same species faces hot, dry valley air and far higher water demand. Advice that is sound in Point Loma can be wrong in El Cajon, and the most common mistake here is treating the county as one climate.

The defining local pest problem is the goldspotted oak borer. It was first detected in San Diego County in 2004 and linked to widespread oak mortality from 2008, and it has since contributed to the death of tens of thousands of trees, principally coast live oak, canyon live oak and California black oak. The single most effective thing a homeowner can do is refuse to move oak firewood — the beetle travels in cut wood far more efficiently than it flies.

Autumn brings Santa Ana winds and elevated fire risk, and much of the region's older planted canopy is eucalyptus, which carries heavy limbs and sheds them. Structural pruning done in the cool season is worth considerably more than anything attempted once the wind is already forecast.

Tree service questions in San Diego

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in San Diego?
It depends on where the tree stands and who has jurisdiction. Trees in the public right-of-way, trees covered by heritage designations, and trees tied to a development or coastal permit are treated very differently from an ordinary tree in a back garden. The City of San Diego, the county's other incorporated cities and unincorporated county areas all set their own rules, and homeowners associations frequently impose stricter conditions than any of them. Confirm with the relevant jurisdiction before scheduling work.
What is the goldspotted oak borer and how do I recognise it?
A small invasive beetle first detected in San Diego County in 2004 and associated with major oak mortality since 2008. Signs include D-shaped exit holes roughly the width of a pencil lead, dark staining or weeping patches on the bark, thinning in the upper canopy, and heavy woodpecker activity on the trunk. It attacks coast live oak, canyon live oak and California black oak. Infested oaks often decline over several years rather than dying suddenly.
Can I take oak firewood from a removed tree?
Do not move it out of the area. Transporting infested oak wood is the main way the goldspotted oak borer reaches new neighbourhoods, and a single load of firewood can seed an infestation miles from its source. Chip it on site, or have the contractor dispose of it locally under current county guidance. Buy firewood where you burn it.
Why does the same species do well at the coast and badly inland?
The marine layer is the difference. Coastal sites get moderated summer temperatures, cooler nights and higher humidity, so water demand stays manageable. Inland valleys run hotter and drier with a much greater day-to-night swing, which raises irrigation need sharply and puts thin-barked species at risk of sunscald on exposed south and west faces.
